MTN Ghana has launched its 15th-anniversary celebrations, marking the successes achieved since the introduction of its Mobile Money (MoMo) financial services. The event, held in Takoradi, was themed “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion.”
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Solomon Hayford, Head of Business Intelligence and Decision Support at Mobile Money Limited, highlighted the vision behind MoMo. He noted that the service was created to expand access to financial services in Ghana, aiming to leverage technology to build a more inclusive financial ecosystem.
“When we embarked on this journey 15 years ago, the landscape of financial services in Ghana was vastly different,” Mr. Hayford stated. “Traditional banking services were inaccessible to a significant segment of the population, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Many Ghanaians faced challenges in conducting basic financial transactions, hindering economic growth and personal empowerment.”
He emphasized that MoMo has significantly contributed to the country’s economic growth, empowering individuals, transforming businesses, and strengthening communities. However, he acknowledged the ongoing challenge of MoMo fraud, which continues to be a major obstacle to promoting digital and financial inclusion.
“MoMo fraud is an issue we are very passionate about at Mobile Money Limited,” Mr. Hayford said. “We will continue to work with all stakeholders through sensitization and awareness initiatives, while investing in robust security measures to combat it and protect our valued customers.”
He advised customers to remain vigilant against fraud, urging them to protect their PINs, avoid unsolicited links, and be cautious of fake SMS messages and random callers.
Mr. Hayford also expressed gratitude to the company’s partners, including regulatory bodies, financial institutions, technology and channel partners, agents, and merchants, for their crucial roles in creating an enabling environment for MoMo to thrive.
As part of the 15th-anniversary celebrations, MTN Ghana has planned various activities, including market launches, float activities across the country, a MoMo fraud campaign, and skills training for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The celebrations will also feature an awards night to recognize key stakeholders, the launch of new services, and customer promotions.
